FALL OF PRODI SPELLS EARLY ELECTIONS
President Napolitano is seeking to avoid an early dissolution of Parliament in spite of the collapse of the majority which, under the leadership of Romano Prodi, won the elections less than two years ago.
The President would like to bring about a temporary Government which rules the country for the time needed to change the electoral system.
However, attempts made in the weeks before the fall of Prodi have shown that there is no wide enough agreement in the present Parliament to achieve a consensus.
